A new commercial promoting same-sex marriage is set to feature comments from Barack Obama, former First Lady Laura Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The advertisement is produced by the Respect for Marriage Coalition, which is co-chaired by the Human Rights Campaign, and is part of a million-dollar effort that also includes print advertising in. It features clips of past comments from various political leaders in an attempt to demonstrate that both Democrats and Republicans support homosexual “marriage.”

“None of us would want to be told that we can’t marry the person that we love,” the ad begins, showing men and women embracing each other. “That’s why a growing number of Americans believe that it’s time to allow marriage for gay and lesbian couples.”

“When couples are committed, then I think they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has,” former First Lady Laura Bush states in the next clip, which is taken from a 2010 interview with talk show host Larry King.

“Allowing them to live together with the protection of law — it seems to me to be the way we ought to be moving in this country,” says former Secretary of State Colin Powell in another clip from CNN.

“Freedom means freedom for everyone,” comments former Vice President Dick Cheney in a snippet lifted from his speech at the 2009 National Press Club.

The advertisement then concludes with Barack Obama’s address during his inauguration last month.

“Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law,” he declares.

“It’s time for marriage,” the narrator then asserts. The advertisement, entitled “Leadership,” is set to air on national cable and during Sunday morning talk shows in the coming weeks.

“Against the backdrop of President Obama’s historic comments about marriage rights in his inaugural address, freedom to marry legislation pending in a number of states, and two landmark marriage cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Coalition is working to grow support for marriage rights for same-sex couples across the nation,” the Respect for Marriage Coalition wrote in a news release announcing the campaign.

The United States Supreme Court is expected to hear oral argument regarding California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act next month, and rule on the matter in June. As previously reported, the court has received over two dozen briefs in support of Biblical marriage.
